Dog Cold Season

We recently sent this announcement to our team to proactively prepare for Fall/Winter and our team asked that we share this with you! So here we go…

Team Announcement: Dog Cold & Flu Season

When the weather shifts from summer to fall/winter and throughout the winter, we often can see an increase in cases of Kennel Cough, similar to how cold and flu season affects humans, especially during the back-to-school period. A common misconception is that Kennel Cough is caused by kennels, but that’s not always the case (and we are not a traditional kennel!) So let's discuss:

Kennel Cough, also known as Infectious Tracheobronchitis, Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD), or Bordetellosis etc. etc. is a highly contagious respiratory infection that affects dogs not humans.

Incubation Period/Symptoms

It has an incubation period of 2 to 14 days, during which dogs can carry and spread the illness without showing any symptoms. None. Nothing. We often have no idea it’s present. By the time symptoms appear, other dogs in close contact may have already been exposed. However, whether they develop symptoms or become ill depends on their immune system's strength and overall health. Some dogs may be exposed and never develop Kennel Cough.

What About Vaccinations?

The Bordetella vaccination is similar to a human flu shot. It doesn’t guarantee full protection, but it significantly reduces the severity of the illness and helps prevent outbreaks. Just as people can still catch the flu even after getting vaccinated, vaccinated dogs can still contract Kennel Cough, though their symptoms are usually milder and shorter in duration.

What can we do?

Clean thoroughly and consistently with the right cleaning products. Make sure the dogs in our care are up to date on their vaccinations. Ask our APP family to keep their dogs at home if they seem out of sorts. Provide plenty of fresh water in clean bowls.

That’s it. Things we do all year round.

The rest is up to the dogs' immune systems and their environments outside of our facility.

If you have any questions, let any of our Team Leads know. :)
